OHIO BUMMERS CAP.

Dark blue wool body with bound leather vizor, leather chin strap, brass "F" on crown, and brass eagle buttons at side, oiled leather sweat band within. Identification carved on lower side of vizor, "No. 14. C.T. Porter, Co F., 171st, O.N.C., May 24th, 1864". 260 x 160 x 60 mm. (10 x 6 x 3 in.), minor fading to wool body [With:] PORTER, C.T., Private. Autograph letter signed, Johnson Island [Ohio], 24 May 1864, 4 pages, 8vo, with original stamped envelope. Porter's first assignment was guarding Confederate prisoners at JJohnson's Island, Ohio but later went on assignment in Kentucky. At Keller's Bridge the 171st took severe casualties during a conflict with Morgan's raiders. Porter was wounded and died on 2 July 1864. (2)
