[STEREOGRAPHS]. RUSSELL, A.J. 23 unusual Civil War studies, 1863-1865, including bridges, trains, battlefields, wharves, etc. mostly in the ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA area, albumen prints (2 possibly salt prints) mounted on plain or yellow card, some with numbers in the negative, few print halves with arched tops, all titled and most dated in ink and pencil in contemporary hand on versos. Subjects include (from verso titles): a rebel rifle pit near Fredericksburg, a study of skeletal remains entitled "The Valley of Jehosaphot, Orange," "Alexa. RRd., Va.," "Wolf street hospital" and "R'way wharf."
The prints are of irregular size, with uneven mounting and quality, all of which indicate an extremely limited circulation for these cards. Four of the views are very similar to photographs taken by Russell (see Dover edition of Russell plates 11, 87, 94 and 97). (23)
