A CARTHAGINIAN GLASS HEAD PENDANT
circa 5th-4th century b.c.
Rod-formed of dark blue glass with an opaque white face and nose, with applied transparent amber ringlets of hair along the forehead and longer spiraling curls for the beard, with opaque white blob ears with opaque yellow blob earrings above and below, the open mouth of opaque yellow, with dark blue eyes outlined in opaque white and dark blue, with arching blue brows above, surmounted by a dark blue suspension ring
1.3/8 in. (3.5 cm) long

Lot Essay

Carthaginian head pendants with amber hair and beards are extremely rare. For a similar example in the Antikensammlungen des Badischen Landesmuseums see no. 25 in Siebenmorgen, et al., Antike Kulturen.
