Lot Essay

A closely related Spanish cope from the 17th Century is illustrated in C. Mayer Thurman, Textiles in the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, 1992, p. 46-47. This method of embroidery called "couching" is achieved by laying silk threads across a base panel and holding them together by short stitches.
