Lot Essay

The French Red glaze line is arguably one of the rarest created by Rookwood. Although the term was not coined until 1969 by the author Edwin J. Kircher III, it refers to the rich red color obtained from an oxide which the firm imported from France in the early 1920s. Very few vessels featuring this glaze were produced as the costs involved were prohibitive.
