An order from the newly appointed Brigadier General, confirmed by the Grant family as being Grant's first order for his Brigadier General's uniform. The document lists Grant's measurements: "Round the Breast under the Coat 35 Round the Waist under the Coat 31 From Middle Back Seam to Elbow 21 From Elbow to rist for length of sleeve 12 From Collar seam to hips button 19 Hip Buttons to bottom of shirt for length of Coat 16 Round the [w]rist 8 Round the Elbow 12 For pants Round the waist 29 From top of Waistband to bottom outside 49." On verso Grant gives further instructions: "Please send in addition to the above one set of buttons and shoulder straps. The pants I would like full in the legs and quite long."
Joseph L. Eisendrath, "Grant's Pants," in Manuscripts, 41:4:311-312 (Fall 1989), explains that the order was placed with Brooks Brothers in New York City with specific instructions and measurements. The order was placed between August and October, 1861, and was delivered before October 25th of that year. When he returned to the army at the outbreak of war, Grant was first commissioned Colonel of the 21st Illinois (17 June -7 August); then promoted to Brigadier General of Volunteers.
