MONROE'S EUPHORIC TOUR OF NEW ENGLAND. The new President, touring New England, writes ahead to the Governor of Vermont in hopes of seeing him. "During my route through the eastern States I have been unable to anticipate the period of my arrival...or to determine precisely on my route through the States of New Hampshire & Vermont. I have this morning decided to pass by Hanover, Royalton, Hancock, Middleburg & Vergennes to Burlington; but cannot traverse your state without expressing the regret I feel, that my engagements and the shortness of my time will not submit me to take the leave of your residence in my way. I shall be at Middleburg on Tuesday afternoon. I need not say that it would give me great pleasure to see you; but I cannot allow you to subject yourself to the slightest inconvenience to meet me."

Monroe was extremely well received in Federalist New England during his 1817 tour; his reception launched the term "Era of Good Feelings," and he ran unopposed in 1820.
