(Marginal stain on title and frontispiece, margin extremes lightly browned throughout, with fraying to a few plates.) Original publisher's embossed cloth, uncut (joints torn at head of spine, hinges cracked). Provenance: George Combe (his presentation inscription to the Society of Writers to the Signet, dated 1840, on front free endpaper); withdrawal stamp on shelf label on front pastedown. FIRST EDITION. "In his day Morton was the most eminent craniologist in the United States. He had a collection of nearly 1,000 skulls" (Garrison-Morton 201).
