Lot Essay

The present work is a superior version of a composition recorded as 'Rembrandt school' by Professor Werner Sumowski and dated to the 1640s (W. Sumowski, Gemlde der Rembrandt-Schler, 1983, IV, p. 2965, no. 1985). In private correspondence, March 1998, Professor Sumowski notes that although he believes that both these works, and a copy in the Museo Municipal, Bjar (Inv. no. 51), may be based on an as yet untraced original, there is in the still life elements a similarity to the work of Heyman Dullaert (1636-1684); see, for example W. Sumowski, op. cit., p. 3704, no. 2261.

We are grateful to Professor W. Sumowski for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
