Lot Essay

The Gothic style was particularly popular in cast-iron furniture both in England and Central Europe. The openwork tracery designs helped to reduce the overall weight of the furniture, and the geometric patterns were easily repeated for two, three and four-seater models of a settee. The design for the model of this particular lot appears in a 19th century English pattern book, and is believed to have been first designed by James Yates between 1830 and 1840. The popularity of this particular model led to copies cast throughout the 19th century in France, Central Europe and America. (G. Himmelheber, Cast-Iron Furniture, Munich, 1996, plate 83)
