[SEFER HA-MAZALOT]. Miscellany volume of short treatises on divination. MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER
Copied by Hananiah ben Menatseach Porto, [Italy, late 16th century]
2o (185 x 120 mm). 25 leaves. Brown ink. Italian semi-cursive script. (Edges frayed, fol. 1 torn and crudely repaired, affecting single letters, slightly browned and thumbed.) Modern blind and gold-tooled brown morocco, erroneously stamped '37' on the spine, two modern paper flyleaves at back and front.
CONTENTS:
Fol. 1r: originally blank, with later title: Sefer ha-Mazalot.
I. Fols. 1v-8v: Horoscopes.
II. Fols. 9r-17r: Goralot (casting of lots), attributed in other sources to Abraham ibn Ezra. In the lower margins the scribe added goralot by Abu Ma'aschar [Djafar ben Muhammed] and Sefer Refafot (divination from palpitations).
Fol. 17v: blank.
III. Fols. 18r-24v: Another, different Sefer Goralot attributed in this manuscript to Abraham ibn Ezra. Includes 110 questions and 106 answers.
IV. Fols. 25rv: Fortunes, based on the day of the month on which one was born and interpretations of dreams.
The scribe copied a record of his birth in 1551 from an inscription by his father, Menatseach ben Solomon, in an old printed Bible on fol. 1v. This note was published by A. Neubauer, in Israelietische Letterbode 11 (1885/6) p. 79-80. The scribe was the owner of MS Paris, Alliance Isralite Universelle 427, in Senigallia.
