Lot Essay

Erotic subjects such as the present one, which allowed Arpino to show off his mastery of the nude, were a favored subject both in paintings and chalk drawings. Drawings of comparable character are in the Uffizi, (H. Röttgen, Il Cavalier d'Arpino, exhib. cat., Rome, Palazzo Venezia, 1976, no. 103, illustrated) and formerly in the John Brophy Collection, Sotheby's, London, 25 November 1971, lot 150, illustrated. A marine scene of A Nereid abducted by a Seagod helped by Tritons, which recalls both in subject and handling the present sheet is at Windsor, H. Röttgen, op. cit., no. 142, illustrated
