Lot Essay

The studies on both the recto and verso are evidently intended for a devotional work of horizontal format, whose subject except for two of the sketches that include Saint Elizabeth (?), was to be the Infant Baptist adoring the Christ Child held by the Virgin. The manner of drawing, characterised by numerous pentimenti, is similar to the studies sold at Sotheby's, London, 3 July 1980, lots 32-4, which relate to Saint Mary Magdalen transported to Heaven by Angels, in the State Galleries, Florence, probably of the late 1650s
