Lot Essay

Pierre drew a number of landscapes during his stay in Rome from 1735 to 1740, a number of which are reproduced in O. Aaron, Jean-Baptiste-Marie Pierre, 1714-1789, Paris, n.d, nos. 1-5, 13. The present drawing with its tight hatching and freely drawn trees is a typical example of the artist's technique in red chalk
