Lot Essay

Tancred d'Hauteville, the Norman knight celebrated for his bravery, was the nephew of Bohemond, the founder of the Principality of Antioch. Tancred took part in the first Crusade and tried in vain to win for himself a principality. When his uncle was captured by the Danishmendids, and later suffered a defeat at the hands of the emperor Alexius I in 1108, Tancred governed Antioch, successfully resisting the Byzantines. He died in 1112.
