Lot Essay

Henry of Flanders succeeded his brother Baldwin of Flanders as Latin emperor of Constantinople after the defeat at Andrinople and the death in captivity of the latter in 1205. Henry was the true founder of the Latin empire. He was successful against both the Bulgars, and the Byzantines, pushing Theodore Lascaris from the shores of the Marmara and pursuing him into the region of Smyrna. The bilingual legend is exceptional, and is clearly for the benefit of both Latin and Greek subjects.
