Lot Essay

Saint Mark, a rare saint on Byzantine seals, was popular among the Xeroi (see the seal of Stephen Xeros, Spink, Zacos I, lot 52). This Basil held several judicial positions in the provinces, but it is difficult to reconstruct his career as there was at least one other Basil Xeros also serving at this time.
