The Georgian family of Apokapai entered the imperial service under Basil II. Basil Apokapes is most renowned for his defense of the fortress of Mantzikert, to the north of lake Van, against repeated attacks by the Seljuk sultan Toghrul Beg. He ended his career at Edessa where his family had property, defending the city against the Turks until his death in 1083.
