Lot Essay
The prototype of circa 1640, on canvas, 106 x 127 cm, is in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence, inv. no.306 (M. Gregori, Uffizi e Pitti - i dipinti delle gallerie Fiorentine, 1994, p.496, fig.645). It may have been painted for Giancarlo de'Medici, Rosa's most important patron (see J. Scott, Salvator Rosa - His Life and Times, 1995, pp.37/8)
