The prototype, signed and dated 1642, on canvas, 363 x 437 cm, has been in the Rijksmuseum since 1808, on loan from the City of Amsterdam. It originally hung in the Great Hall of the Kloveniersdoelen, Amsterdam, and was later moved to the Town Hall, when it was trimmed at the left and bottom edges, in order to fit in the War Council Room. The present copy was executed after this had happened (J. Bruyn et.al., A Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings, 1989, III, pp.430/85, no.A146/1, ill).
