Possibly by Matthijs Horrix, circa 1780-1795
Inlaid overall with narrow panels, the rising rectangular screen covered in light green satin, surmounted by a rectangular panel decorated with a flower basket and flanked by spreading sides, surmounted by ormolu foliate urn finials, the frame with flower-heads to the corners, on splayed legs and block feet, minor restorations

Lot Essay

Matthijs Horrix, Mr. Kabinetwerker in 1764

This elegant fire screen is closely related to the marquetry wainscoting, inlaid with lacquer panels, of the Audiencie Zael at Huis ten Bosch near The Hague, which was executed by Matthijs Horrix in 1790-'91. Among the furniture, which Horrix supplied for that room, was a pair of fire screens, which are very similar to present example. (R.J.
