A SILVER COFFEE POT AND A TEAPOT
ATTRIBUTED TO ANTHONY RASCH, PHILADELPHIA, CIRCA 1818

Urn form, with flaring cylindrical neck and spreading circular foot, the rim, shoulder and footrim chased with die-rolled leaf borders, the lid and lower body repousse and chased with paterae, with eagle's-head spout and wood bracket handles issuing from acanthus, the cover surmounted by a spread-winged eagle, apparently unmarked--height of coffee pot 11 3/8in., height of teapot 10¼in.

Lot Essay

A teapot and coffeepot of identical form marked by Rasch are part of a set presented in 1818 to the daughter of Captain John Blakely, U.S.N., lost at sea during a victorious battle against British sloops in 1814. The matching tea service is illustrated in David B. Warren et al., Marks of Achievement, 1987, fig. 134, p.112.
