Lot Essay

Krishna Yashoda is a direct copy of a popular Kalighat subject. However, Jamini Roy modified the line and colour of the Kalighat original to suit his own artistic sensibility. For instance, the spontaneity of the single Kalighat stroke has been substituted here by a double line which flattens the image making it bold and highly decorative.

For a similar painting see Jamini Roy: In the context of Indian folk sensibility and his impact on modern art, New Delhi, 1992, p. 67.
