Gesture

In the late 1970's as Tyeb Mehta gained confidence in his own handling of flat colour, the diagonal as a structuring device disappeared from his paintings. In the present work from 1977 all superflous elements have been eliminated in favour of bold, flat planes of colour, structured by sparse sensitive drawing. In this way the artist achieves a new purity in his work.
