The Esplanade at Calcutta, with Esplanade Row beyond

The Espalanade was formed out of the jungle surrounding the Fort, extending towards a new road called Espalanade Row. The whole area was cleared and levelled to form a great esplanade and building on the land was prohibited.
Thomas Prinsep was a younger brother of William. He arrived in Calcutta in 1821 and worked as a surveyor with the Bengal Engineers until his tragic death in 1820 when he fell from a horse.
