Lot Essay

The present watercolour is possibly by the same hand as an artist commissioned by Lord Wellesley, whose collection of 2660 folios of natural history paintings is now in the India Office Library. Many of the drawings depict animals presented to Wellesley as gifts, received as a result of his important office, but others are the result of his interest in the subject and contact with fellow enthusiasts, who added to his collection.
