An attractive print after Brown's painting depicting the moment when, on 26 February 1792, the sons of Tipu Sultan, Abdal Khaliq and Muiz-ud-din, were handed over to Cornwallis together with the preliminary treaty between Tipu and the British forces. Cornwallis had taken Bangalore in 1791 and reaching Seringapatam in February, brought about the treaty, holding the Tipu's sons to ensure that their father met its conditions. Brown's painting was placed on view in November 1792 at the gallery of 'Messrs Orme & Co' who stated that the artist had 'received every assistance by drawings made in India, and information from officers from high rank who were present on the occasion.' (Archer, p.421) Born in Boston, Mather Brown studied under Benjamin West in England, exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1782 until his death in 1831.
