From 1865 onwards, after the artist's first visit to Germany that year, German motives and influences became omnipresent throughout his work. In the 1870's Gerard obtained great success with his German-inspired genre scenes - of which the present lot is a typical example - and regurlarly won medals at the many national and international exhibitions at which he participated.
