Lot Essay

The theme of the Parisian sphinx is a returning one in Alfred Stevens' carreer and has largely participated to his considerable success as a painter. The prime version with the same title dates from 1867 and is in the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp (inv.no. 1373).

As indicated by the inscription on the stretcher, the painting was executed during the siege of Paris by the Prussians in 1870.

The Comit Alfred Stevens has confirmed the authenticity of this work on the basis of a colour photograph.
