Lot Essay

The sitter in the present lot has been tentatively identified as the artist's wife Charlotte Polet de Faveaux, who was married to Rops in 1857. The fact that Rops had separated from Charlotte a year before the date of execution of the present lot and had moved to Paris to live with his mistress, makes this identification rather unlikely.
