Lot Essay

Sir William Chambers published designs for furniture in a similar style to the present chairs, in Designs of Chinese Buildings, Furniture, etc., 1757 (illustrated in E. White, Pictorial Dictionary of British 18th Century Furniture Design, Woodbridge, p. 133). Chambers writes: 'The moveables of the Saloon consist of Chairs, Stools and Tables, made sometimes of rose-wood, ebony, or lacquered work, and sometimes of Bamboo only, which is cheap, and nevertheless very neat.' A closely related pair of chairs was sold from the Hochschild Collection, Sotheby's London, 1 December 1978, lot 148.
