Lot Essay

The table-cabinet and its tripod-stand, with crepidoma-stepped 'altar' plinth and Grecian-scrolled 'claw', is decorated in black 'penwork' in the manner of Grecian vases. Its classical figures relate to those featured in John Flaxman's illustrations for The Odyssey of Homer, London, 1805; while the Oriental 'Indian' figures in the fashion termed 'le style Pillement' relate to that on a cabinet at Leeds Castle (illustrated in New York, Hyde Park Antiques, Ltd, Penwork: The Triumph of Line, 1989, no. A-2). Patterns for such 'ornaments for painting on Wood' were published in R. Ackermann's The Repository of Arts, 2nd series, Vol. III in 1817.
