Lot Essay

Related models of chenets dated around 1700-1710 are illustrated in H. Ottomeyer, P. Prschel, et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I., p. 68, ill. 1.10.2 and 1.10.3. The former is in the Muse des arts dcoratifs, Paris. A pair of closely related chenets of the same shape and with almost identical bearded masks on each urn, from the collection of Baron Double, chteau de Saint Prix, Saint-Leu, Val d'Oise, previously in the collection of Monsieur Mnage de Pressigny, Fermier-Gnral, was offered at Sotheby's, Monaco, 9 December, 1984, lot 902.
