Lot Essay

This commode relates to a type often described as Lombard even if some examples were made in the Veneto region. This type is occasionally also found with a fall-front secretaire drawer to the top. A related commode described as possibly from Padua is illustrated in C. Alberici, Il Mobile Veneto, Milano, 1980, pp. 119-121. The top of that comparable commode is inlaid with a cartouche depicting a cavalry battle. A similar pair of commodes belonging to the Late Mr. Nicholas Meynell's Trustees was sold in these Rooms, 25 March 1999, lot 160.
