Lot Essay

The subject of this curious painting has yet to be identified. The buildings and the large number of Europeans suggest that the painter must have spent a certain amount of time outside of Iran. It is possible that he was working in the North-West of Iran or even outside the borders where contacts with the West were more accesible.
Another watercolour by the artist is recorded in Karimzadeh (vol. I, p.56) and is dated 1260/1844. According to the author, this painting also features Europeans among a gathering of kings, princes and nobles. Both paintings also feature a monkey!
