Lot Essay

After years of study in Paris and work as decorator, Privat-Livemont turned to posters in 1889. His designs almost always featured the central figure of a woman and it is easy to compare his style to that of Mucha. The opinion of contemporary critics indicates that the latter followed the example of Privat-Livemont who received an increasing number of commissions for posters such as 'Cacao Van Houten', 'Coffee Rajah' and the present lot for 'J.C. Boldoot, parfumerie'.

The present painting was used as the poster to advertise the exhibition De l'art nouveau l'art dco held in Lausanne in 1976.
