Worked with polychrome silk threads on a silk moiré ground, depicting a gentleman and a lady in pastoral garb with farmhouse, haystacks, sheep, a dog, a swan, ducks, a squirrel, and a rabbit in background; in original black-painted cavetto frame, signed on back panel "Mary Flower her Work done in the Year 1764"--25in. high, 21 3/8in. overall width

Lot Essay

Mary Flower (1744-1778) was the daughter of prominent Philadelphia Enoch Flower (1705-1773), and the sister of Ann Flower (see lot 113, May 1987, Christie's). Another fine needlework picture by Mary Flower, dated 1768 and depicting a hunting scene, was sold in these rooms on January 24, 1987, lot 110.
