Lot Essay

The artist was the younger brother of Massccio. From December 1420 and through the following year, he is recorded in Florence in the workshop of Bicci di Lorenzo, and in 1430 enroled in the Compagnia di S.Luca, where he appears as Scheggia or Splinter, a Tuscan nickname for characters of slight build. Between 1436 and 1440, Scheggia colaborated on the Intarsia designs for the cupboards on the south wall of the Sagrestia della Messe in Florence Cathedral; indeed the testimony of Brumelleschi's biographer, Antonio Manneti, suggests that Scheggia was on close terms with the architect. For the birth of Lorenzo di Medici on 1st January 1449, Scheggia was commissioned to paint a desco da parto depicting The Triumph of Fame.

We are grateful to Mr. Everett Fahy for confirming the attribution on the basis of a photograph.
