Corporal F.C. Newton was wounded during the fight on Cannon Kopje on 31.10.1899. The Boers pounded the Kopje with artillery, massed for a three pronged assault and then attempted to capture the fort. The attack was beaten off but not before six defenders had been killed and five wounded.
