A large contingent of Marines and Bluejackets from H.M.S. Doris was landed in Cape Colony around 20.10.1899, as reinforcements for the weak force holding Stormberg. It was thought for a time that the town might be attacked if the Boers invaded Cape Colony and it was the only junction that might have been successfully defended.
