Private J. Goodall was one of 11 members of the 4th Dragoon Guards attached to the 5th Dragoon Guards in the Defence of Ladysmith. Only three 'Elandslaagte' clasps were awarded to 4th Dragoon Guards and six King's South Africa Medals, the Regiment not being officially employed in South Africa.
