Colonel Herbert Adolphe Coddington, D.S.O., O.B.E., held important Staff positions in Natal during the Boer War and received the especial praise of General Buller in his Despatch of 30.3.1900:

'Captain H.A. Coddington, Royal Irish Fusiliers, Baggage Master, Pietermaritzburg - Has had a very difficult task to carry out. He has shown great energy and considerable power of organisation. I trust his labours may be rewarded' (London Gazette 8.2.1901 refers).

Coddington was the Baggage Master from 1.12.1899 to 30.5.1901 and then D.A.A.G. on General Lyttleton's Staff in Natal 1901 to 1903. For his services in the War he was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order, awarded the Brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel and Mentioned in Despatches twice.

He retired in 1904 after a final appointment as Chief Staff Officer, Natal but was recalled for service at the beginning of the Great War and served in Military Intelligence at the War Office, being Mentioned in Despatches thrice, awarded the O.B.E. and promoted Colonel in 1919.
