Lot Essay

Squadron Corporal-Major J. Brown enlisted in the Medical Staff Corps in 1891 and after service in the Sudan Campaign he was transferred to the forces of the Royal Niger Company in February 1898. He served in West Africa from February 1898 to October 1899 and in the Boer War from November 1899 to December 1900. In 1904 he transferred into the 2nd Life Guards and was appointed Corporal of Horse and Hospital Steward. Brown was promoted Squadron Corporal-Major in 1906, awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in October 1907 and died while still serving in February 1908.
