The 2nd Battalion, Devonshire Regiment arrived at the Cape in October 1899 and served in General Hildyard's 2nd Brigade during the Natal Campaign. They fought at the battles and engagements of Colenso, Vaal Krantz, Monte Cristo, Wynne's Hill, Pieter's Hill, Alleman's Nek, Bergendaal and Paardeplaats.
