Captain H.C. Keith Fraser was the Adjutant of the South African Light Horse, raised at Cape Town in October 1899. As with its Natal counterpart, the Imperial Light Horse, it was commanded by Regulars and composed of suitable Troopers drawn from the Uitlander refugees and 'that curious legion of Britishers who, sensing a fight, are in the right place.' An excellent account of its raising and blooding can be found in Colonel C. Court Repington's Vestigia. After his escape from Pretoria, Winston Churchill was given a commission in the S.A.L.H. and became Assistant Adjutant.
