Sold with a portrait photograph, circa 1920 and copy of the recipient's Birth Certificate (dated 30.11.1917), this latter stating that he was born in the Burrum River District, Queensland, Australia in February 1880, the son of an English carpenter and an Irish mother.
Sergeant J.H. Pizzey served at the outbreak of the Great War with the 8th Infantry (2nd Battalion, Transvaal Scottish) in German South-West Africa, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He subsequently joined the 9th South African Infantry and served with them in East Africa. Wounded in action on the 11.5.1916 ('gun shot wound to the head and left ear'), he was discharged in 1917.
