D.C.M. London Gazette 27.9.1901.

A local newspaper report states:

'Mr. George Horner was buried in the Churchyard [Weston] on Monday afternoon with military honours. He was in the 2nd Beds. Regt., and, as recorded last week, was awarded the D.C.M. in the Boer War. He also went through the Chitral Campaign. In the Boer War he was shot in the right leg, and the wound never healing properly, about a year later he had to have the foot amputated ...

The 2/1 Welsh (Howitzer) Brigade provided a gun carriage and escort, in command of Major Harris, with Lieut. Owen Jones second in command. The coffin was taken from the deceased's house to the Churchyard gate on the gun carriage, drawn by a team of six horses. The coffin was draped with the Union Jack, on which reposed the deceased's four medals: the D.C.M., the Chitral Campaign Medal, Queen Victoria's Boer War Medal and King Edward's Boer War Medal ...

Lance-Corpl. Horner in the Boer War fired two shots at Gen. Botha, who told him afterwards they were only half an inch from his ear. He was in patrol of nine, when they were surprised by fifty Boers. His horse was shot in the back, another bullet went into his haversack, being stopped by a spoon, bullets whistled around his head, and his horse, being shot again, fell and threw him. He was captured but escaped.'

Lance-Corporal George Horner, D.C.M., was wounded at Vlakfontein on 19.9.1901.
