Colonel Arthur Hill took the 3rd (Militia) Battalion to South Africa in February 1902 and commanded it on blockhouse duty in the Orange Free State until the conclusion of hostilities. Hill was the Honorary Colonel of the 3rd Battalion and an important figure in Cheshire (see Burke's Landed Gentry for further details.)
