Lot Essay

Born in Kobe, Kanayama attended the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. He lived in France from 1912 until the outbreak of World War I and his European paintings brought him success and recognition upon his return to Japan. Rural landscapes became his prime subject during his travels in Europe and remained his specialty later. The present painting probably dates from the 1930s.
