Seiro nikai no zu, goban tsuzuki (View of the upper story of a brothel, pentaptych)

The panoramic view was popular in prints of the 1810s and 20s, and Kunisada designed at least six backstageviews of three Edo theaters for the publisher Eijudo. In this view, he illustrates various people enjoying themselves in a Yoshiwara brothel. In the corridor to the right of the staircase, a chortling priest is led by male servants. In the largest suite in the center, overlooking the courtyard, a male client resembles the actor Sawamura Sojuro IV (1784-1812). Another male client in a black robe with the Utagawa school's toshidama crests, led by a kamuro on the far left, is probably Utagawa Toyokuni (1769-1825), Kunisada's master. In the party at the lower right, the client in a robe with Kunisada's sada marks on his back is possibly Kunisada himself.
